An Architecture for Advance Reservations in the Internet

Much work has been done on establishing resource reservations over the Internet 3, 2, 8], but almost all of this work has consisted of establishing a reservation that begins immediately and has indeenite duration. An important issue is how to request an advance reservation, a reservation made now for resources that are to be reserved in the future. In this paper, we propose an architecture for Advance Reservation Servers (ARS), and describe their operation. By using ARS, no reservation state or scheduling state needs to be set up in the routers until the reservation is established. No multicast routing state (for multicast sessions) needs to be set up, either, until the reservation is established.
